A Practical Approach to Infectious Disease Control

Introduction: Animals do not catch infectious diseases by chance.   Staying healthy has nothing to do with luck.   In fact, it is easy to predict, from a population viewpoint, which animals will get sick.  Everyone would agree animals housed in overcrowded or unsanitary conditions have higher disease rates than animals living in clean spacious environments.  However, unless we are careful, we may find animals under our care housed in overcrowded or unsanitary conditions.  Protecting animal populations from infectious diseases requires constant evaluation of disease transmission risks—Biological Risk Management (BRM).  It also requires strategic use of vaccines as well as proper use of disinfectants.  This presentation will discuss how to develop BRM policies to minimize the spread of infectious diseases.  It will also discuss strategic use of vaccines to minimize infectious diseases and the most common mistakes made when using disinfectants.
