In this presentation, we will discuss several key topics that were included in the recent World Congress of Veterinary Dermatology held this past summer. The first part of the talk will concern otitis media in cats and dogs including the causes and relevant diagnostics and therapeutics. Next, we will examine several important considerations regarding atopic dermatitis; first we will highlight the connection between the gut microbiota and development of atopic dermatitis in humans and animals. Then we will talk about the itch cycle and various ways this cycle can be blocked. I will provide updates on how skin barrier defects are becoming increasingly important in the pathology of atopic dermatitis. The final section of the presentation will include information regarding emerging bacterial skin diseases in veterinary medicine and conclude with a discussion about antimicrobial stewardship.
